Pan India MNP launch on 20th Jan 2011

Mobile Number Portability was officially launched in the state of Haryana, with the service kicking off from the city of Rohtak.

Now, the rollout across the country will be done by 20th January 2011.

Mobile Number Portability, also known as MNP, allows users to switch their mobile service providers without having to change their existing mobile number. In the current scenario, if you are not happy with one mobile service provider, you will have to change your mobile number if you choose another service provider.

To apply for number portability, users have to send an sms “PORT mobilenumber” from their phone to 1900. The reply sms will carry a Unique Porting Code (UPC). This sms will be sent by the existing mobile service provider.

Armed with the UPC, the user can fill up the application form of any other service provider and submit all necessary verification documents. The porting process will be completed within 7 days.

The user will be charged Rs 19 for this service.

However, the interesting thing to note here is that MNP does not allow users to shift numbers across states. If you are shifting your city, then the number of the current city will not be with you in the new city.
